Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
